Allsortz Open Mic does ‘Eargasm’ – August 2014

Written Ella Achola (@ella_achola)

“Vibrant, raw talent and enjoyable” is what Izara B, director and creative assistant of Allsortz Open Mic, hoped for Eargasm to be that night and full of talent it was indeed. Allsortz worked together with Lyrix Organix and 3 Styles to organise this event, bringing together a range of artists and designers to take over the Dalston Roof Park for a night of Eargasm. Host Dekan, Allsortz Open Mic founder, did not fail on his promise to showcase London’s best upcoming talent in exchange for love and support for the artists from the audience, which continuously filled the roof park as fears of rain and thunderstorms dwindled and the performers’ energy enveloped the beautiful roof space.

During the sound check I explored the fashion side of the event, swaying to the old school hip-hop tunes of DJ Olivia Au (gold). I left impressed by how many use fashion as a means to inspire and empower young people. Alongside The Bakery by Cakey, which uniquely combines cake, sweets and clothing, Strip Clothing, and Mayamada, an anime and manga inspired clothing brand, there was also Strut Daily, my favourite stall of the night. A female empowerment brand, Nadine and Toy go beyond pure fashion and also work with young girls in Hackney aged 13 to 16, facilitating so-called struta workshops in dance, drama and fashion to build the girls’ confidence.

Clinton Elvis(Clinton Elvis)

Clinton Elvis opened up the musical part of Eargasm with high notes and dance moves to the well-known hits of Michael Jackson. He was followed by the live human beatbox performance of Bass 6 who not only hit the audience with the most unusual of sounds but also personal beatboxed renditions of Benny Benassi’s ‘Satisfaction’ and Louis Armstrong’s ‘What A Wonderful World.’

The atmosphere got cosier as the sky turned darker and one half of Sister Sidney took the stage, lulling us all in a performance sounding no less soulful than when the sibling duo performed together at the Great British Carnival, Claire’s beautiful vocals warming up the chilly roof park.

Sister Sidney

(Sister Sidney)

Next up was Allsortz favourite Ayshamar who owned the stage with a soul performance that was simple but spoke volumes nonetheless. Ayshamar is a singer/songwriter who started playing the piano when she was three years old. Speaking to her she told me she was inspired by everyday things she sees, the people around her, and her personal life journey, using her music as an opportunity to engage with her identity and allow for others to relate to it.

India Graye filled the terrace with a voice that hit each note crystal clear as she was accompanied by nothing more than her ukulele and followed performances of rapper Raptum and singer Jem Cooke before another Allsortz favourite, DC SCRIBBLA, a young rapper, got the crowd clapping and grooving to his old school tunes that remind of a musical era unfortunately long gone. He had just flown in from Texas, deciding to kick jet lag and travel fatigue to the curb and join us on the roof park with an energy that easily matched that of the older (and more rested) performers of the night. DC started making music when he was ten years old and quotes his influences as Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West. His main genre is hip-hop, which he likes to mix with other genres as he is inspired by life in London and being young.

Izara B was the only spoken word artist of the night, performing her piece ‘Materialistic Society’, which criticises a society in which the rich get richer and the poor strive for an illusion built by capitalist society’s expectations of what it means to be happy. She rightfully reminds us that fulfilling our needs should not be equated to having it all, and that materialism is not crucial to survival. She excelled in capturing the audience with nothing more than her voice, delivering her lines with passion and energy.

Miss Sha(Miss Sha)

Miss Sha’s performed some beautiful slow tunes about love and relationships before Shemzy closed Eargasm with a bang, switching up his hip hop set with some acapella “to get people’s attention”, which he did indeed.

Allsortz Open Mic, Lyrix Organix and 3 Styles succeeded in putting together a night of music and fashion that was engaging, stimulating and showcased a wide range of upcoming talent. Make sure to catch their next events in September!

Allsortz Open Mic – June 2014

Ever wondered what Allsortz Open Mic is all about? Well you’ve come to the right place to find out!

We bring the talent every second Monday of the month to Rich Mix and this month was no different. With a pool of main acts to dive into, Kay Doggz took to the stage first lyrically engaging the audience by telling us about his fondness for alcohol.

As well as all the main acts, we also encourage artists to sign up on the night and this month was not shy of Wildcards. We had the pleasure of welcoming spoken word artists Tolu and Kamari, who both took us on a journey through the depth of their words.

We also had a taste of three different approaches to ‘love’ (or ‘lust’?!)… Soph Chei shared quite a sensual piece of poetry; Samantha, strapped with her acoustic guitar, sang a set focused on love as well as Ridez who rapped about his difficulty approaching women. Finally, to end the list of main acts, I (Izara B) took to the stage to perform my latest piece resurrection.

With love out of the way, we had an Allsortz regular Boy Nash back on stage to share one of his latest tracks from his upcoming EP ‘Gods Image 2’; followed by his producer The Beat Hustler who decided to perform for his very first time. Body popping Chris also took the audience by surprise and even gave us all a 60 second dance lesson!

Stand out performance of the night was by Modulation. A rapper that wastes no time on the mic with countless rhymes, switching up his style numerous times…all whilst acapella of course! If you looked up the word lyrical, we’re pretty sure you’d see his face besides it!

We were back on the Rich Mix stage once again to get rid of those Monday blues with some of the freshest talent out there at the moment! Remember Videos from the night can be found here

We kick started the night with a fashion show by Ireland Nigeria who shared their latest collection with the audience followed by a performance from Team Infamous. If you would like to find out more get following @IrelandNigeria.

With a handful of talent to get through, kicking off April’s edition of #AllsortzOpenMic was Sam Way who had no problem getting a bit of audience participation whilst doing the matrix. We also had Ash Future joined by Jay Difference share their unique hip-hop style.

The night wouldn’t have been complete without ‘the battle of the bands’. First up we had the pleasure of welcoming Damien Ike on stage who gave us a visual treat all whilst sitting in the dark…YEP! The energy of all the band members took the night by storm with a great amount of energy pouring out from the stage.

Stand out WildCard performance of the night was by Sylvia Mwenze. Strapped with her acoustic guitar she took us all on an emotional journey with her soft tone and heartfelt lyrics. Definitely an act to look out for.

What an amazing way to start the week! First up if you missed this show, then you missed one of our best! But because we don’t hold a grudge, you can watch it all over again here via our Ustream links.  – http://t.co/cO7ty3JEkl and here http://t.co/lJs2b9gl7n Enjoy 🙂

The evening was part of our celebration for International Women’s Day which was on Saturday 8th. To help us mark this day we partnered with the Youth Media Agency who hosted an insightful and energetic debate about the the roles of women in the media and the challenges they face. Search Twitter for #femaleshowreel to check out some of the conversation. An action packed start to our night and we hadn’t even really got out of first gear! Helping us kick our night of celebrating the amazing female performers we have in the capital was the dance group, ‘The Truth’ led by @LauraLiles . This amazingly talented trio of street dancers were joined on stage by some proper ‘lil men’ who simply took the crowd by storm and had us all cheering away! The Truth was followed by the beautiful words of @IAmMiday, the funky rap verses of @IAmThandi, the cool sophisticated voice of @LauraClemo.

If this wasn’t enough to get the audience dancing in their seats our all female line-up celebrating International Women’s Day moved into another gear when @LanaPeswani and then the lovely @LinahNambooze took the stage. Both had voices that lit up the room and had us all begging them to return.

@TaliaAJay swept us away with her beautifully sultry voice. Our penultimate artist was Ayshamar @aysha_nikita to look at her standing on stage you would not expect such a powerful, yet silky voice to literally reach out and grab you – That young lady has talent!

Finally our Allsortz Open Mic stage was blessed by our very own and very talented @Izara_B Having come straight from performing at City Hall, she dropped her latest verse on us and blew us all away! If you missed it – here it is – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzrIaaE9ndE

Because we are trying to do our bit to support and celebrate International Women’s Day this whole month of March we’re funding raising for the Global Giving project, ‘Voices of the Future’ which aims to lift and unite the voices of women to empower them to be the voice of change around the world. If you’d like to contribute please go to our JustGiving Page. All your support is always appreciated.

Just time to tell you that next month we’re on Monday 14th April, so stick the date in your diary and come and support us and London’s talented artists. If you’re interested in performing go here. (Please read the instructions carefully before submitting your email).

Allsortz Open Mic, January 13 2014

Written by Izara B

Our very first edition of Allsortz Open Mic 2014 started with a bang. We had just a few acts on the lineup, but as they say, ‘quality over quantity’.

We couldn’t start our 2014 edition without getting James déCosta back on stage. Needless to say, he won the crowd over with his stand out performance, with assistance from his acoustic guitarist and bassist, and even had the whole crowd chanting ‘one more’.

Next up we had Coco DeParis and her guitarist take to the stage with a touch of Jazz.

Back on the Rich Mix stage spreading happy Monday vibes was of course Allsortz and some of the best London talent!

Getting the evening started differently this time around were local videographers from DessyMak Productions and Freelance Films who shared their short films.

20131019-091440.jpg
(With the mic in his hand, Allsortz founder Dekan Apajee gets the show started)

With a long talented line up, we had performances from Carol Jack and of course her guitarist, Lea Rogers; Steven Lue who left the poetry at home this time and showed us that he can sing too; we also had Katie J White who owned the stage with her powerful voice and the beautifully husky Irish voice of Sample Answer with his amazing presence on stage.

Stand out performance of the night was by one of our wildcards, spoken word artist Ollie O’Neill who showed us exactly why she is 1 of 6 winners of SLAMbassadors 2013. To see Ollie and the rest of the winners, join them on 1st November from 4-7pm at the Clore Ballroom, Royal festival hall.

(Ollie O’Neill lyrically engaging the audience)

We had more WildCards who jumped up to share their talents with our audience. Natavan who is a young poet bravely grabbed the mic and performed for the very first time in front of a live audience; Ella CR blessed the stage her soulful voice; Shawts who brought a bit of hip hop to the stage and Calm who shared a love poem.

Back on the Allsortz stage was Soultanna who took us all back in time with her amazing lyrics, unique tone and extremely visual performance. All of this whilst accompanied by her guitarist who switched it up throughout the set. If you haven’t seen her perform, you need to get onto the Allsortz YouTube Channel!

(Soultanna entertaining the crowd)

We also had an Amy Winehouse cover performed as an acapella by Alysa; followed by the most energetic performance of the night by Handles who is described as the UK Kanye West – needless to say he had the whole crowd on their feet and last by not least Mr Allsortz cameraman himself Jolade who ended the night on a high note with a poem about change.

The sun was shining so that could only mean one thing… we brought the freshest talent in London to the Rich Mix stage for our summer gig!

20130712-135408.jpg
(Allsortz organiser Dekan Apajee, getting the show started)

During the first half we really got the happy Monday vibes going with performances by: Rajiv who confidently took to the stage to show us exactly what he can do vocally and also gave us a treat when Mr Arch surprised the audience by joining him. Next up, Shade, a poet who surprisingly has only been performing for 3months, yet truly inspired the crowd with her words.

Up next on the mic was our stand out performance of the night, Mr Harris. The intensity of his set was felt by all as everyone attentively listened to every word which he honestly shared. His last poem which questioned ‘Have you ever?’ was a reflection of the depth of situations from his personal life and really got the audience thinking about their own experiences.

20130712-135548.jpg
(Mr Harris captivating the audience with his heart felt poems)

With the love meter running high throughout the night, we also had wildcards take to the stage and own it! Lydia Maddix was first up along with her acoustic guitar, Angeline who performed for the very first time in front of a live audience by doing an acapella of a Rihanna song and Jamie Leo also took on a cover performing acapella, but this time of Frank Ocean’s track ‘Thinking about you’.

20130712-135655.jpg
(Dark Phonix performing their set)

After a few months away from our stage, three-piece band Dark Phonix were back strapped with their guitars and exploiting their distinctive sound, with lyrics that has a great storytelling element to it.
During our second half, we had the pleasure of having on stage: Mr Arch joining us for the second time who received a nonstop applause for his energetic performance and Sistersidney (who are really sisters) captivating the audience with their mellow sound.

20130712-135805.jpg
(Sergio ending our summer gig)

We can’t forget Sergio who of course brought the evening to an end with an engaging performance which was extremely rhythmic and prided itself on honesty.
After all the amazing performances, we couldn’t just end the night on that note. YES – we got behind the camera once again to conduct short interviews with our features! Keep your eyes peeled if you want to find out more about our great acts.

Thanks to all of our acts who took to the big stage and last but not least, the audience for keeping the love meter high which definitely made this a happy Monday.

Once again we brought all-sorts (excuse the pun) of great talent from across London to the big stage at Rich Mix to get our weeks started right!

With a jam packed evening of performances, Jerome LDN took to the stage to kick start this month’s edition of Allsortz with his melodic voice which had the audience captivated from the very beginning.

(Jerome LDN getting the evening started)

Back on the Allsortz mic for a main slot were Wildcards from last month, Strive and Drama. Who individually delivered standout performances but also gave our audience an unexpected lyrical treat, by joining forces not once…but twice!!

20130614-132747.jpg
(from left to right: Drama and Strive , lyrically engaging the audience on the Rich Mix stage)

Throughout the night the quality remained consistently high with performances from: Howell James who got the laughs going, Be Right Back with their passionate performance, Regina O with her thought provoking words and Mila Falls who kept the energy going from the very start.

Standout performance of the night was by LA Salami, with his unique tone alongside image rich lyrics which had us all in a trance. All of this whilst equipped with a harmonica and acoustic guitar…of course!!

20130614-132917.jpg
(LA Salami showing us his musical skills)

Last but not least, James Decosta alongside his two talented guitarists and special guest brought the night to an end with a vocally powerful performance, which got us all ready for next month’s event!

But if that wasn’t enough, throughout the night we had short 60 second interviews with all our performers – so if you couldn’t make it down or want to know more about them, keep an eye out for that! And here they are!

Thanks to everyone who blessed the stage and of course, the audience who kept the support level high throughout the evening, making the atmosphere ideal for a happy Monday.

The evening started with an exclusive press screening in association with the Youth Media Agency for Samuell Benta’s hit web comedy series, All About The Mckenzies . The main space at our home venue of Rich Mix in east London was jammed of fans, mainstream and youth press teams, as well as the odd celebrity and of course the cast of the series!

After watching the first episode which had the whole audience laughing away, it was time for more of London’s best talent to take to the stage and entertain us. And entertain us they did!

The first act up on stage was folk band, ‘Francis and Boyd’ – a group of under 23 year olds with talent and stage presence that surpassed their years! The energy from the band was contagious and before long the crowd were up, and they were dancing!

20130514-132159.jpg

More great performers took to the stage including first time performer at #AllsortzOpenMic #Novea who seduced the crowd with sultry tones…

Next up was Joe Eyre who got us all laughing again with unique comedy, Nego True engaged our minds and got the audience wondering about ‘Sometimes’

The list of WildCards was long and some of the most talented we’ve seen this year. Samuel King, Strive, Drama, JC, Laid Down Lover, Jolade, Shadow, Alvin, Mica Penn and Stephanie braved the walk to the Allsortz stage and were rewarded for their efforts by nonstop applause. Hoping that we’ll see that all back here soon playing one of our main sets!
